The chisso coropration fisrt opened a chemical factory in minamata, 1908. They were initally producing fertillisers. The minamata factory became the most advance in all Japan. The waste products resulting from the manufacture of these chemicals were released into minamata bay in the factory waste water., the chemicals waste were damaging the enviroment. Fisheries weere damaged to term of reduced catches. Less fish were caught because the fish were dead.
Chisso coroporation in september 1958 discharge its wastewater dirctly into the minamata river istead of its waste into hyakken harbar. This solution was not appropriate. First the fish at the mouth of the river died and peole in other fishing villagaes up and down the coast of shiranu sea were effected. Polluting wastewater had damaged the fisheries around minamata ever since the opening of the chisso factor, in 1908.
From 1932-1968, the chisso coroporation dumped an estimated 27 tonnes of mercury compounds, into mianamta baay.
Company paid off people who didn’t want them to dump the waste instead of implementing (putting into place) an emviromenatlly safe technique of waste removal. They did this because it was cheaper.
